Credentials Explained

Understanding coaching credentials

Coaching is not a regulated profession in Canada — anyone can call themselves a coach. Credentials aren't mandatory, but they're a useful signal. Here's what the most common ones mean.

ACC
Associate Certified Coach
The entry-level ICF credential. Requires a minimum of 100 coaching hours and a demonstrated competency assessment. A solid, verifiable starting point.
PCC
Professional Certified Coach
Requires 500+ coaching hours and a more rigorous competency evaluation. The credential most working professionals hold or are actively working toward.
MCC
Master Certified Coach
The ICF's highest credential. Requires 2,500+ coaching hours and an advanced competency assessment. Relatively rare — and genuinely meaningful when held.
No ICF credential
Some excellent coaches hold other certifications, are completing their credential, or bring professional backgrounds in psychology or HR. Credentials are one signal — not the only one.
